《2021.08.25》"Bamboo and Wood Creativity" - Transforming Communities Through Design
To realize the inheritance of traditional Taiwanese arts and culture and the sustainable development of the environment, Chang Gung University and Taipei University of Technology jointly promoted the "Bamboo and Wood Creativity" joint learning activity. It shares the design capabilities and rich natural, tribal, and traditional cultural resources of both schools in Taiwan. Through repeated encounters, a tacit understanding of the common good of the community has been formed.
This joint learning activity included how Liu Yingjie, a teacher from the Department of Industrial Design at Chang Gung University, combined local culture and agricultural specialties. He led 23 Generation Z designers to conduct field learning in Fuxing District, Taoyuan, and collaborated with local artists and craftsmen for collaborative innovation. Using sustainable bamboo products as the main axis, local natural materials were used to develop culturally characteristic goods, thereby driving local economic development. Field learning emphasizes that the learning process must involve conversations with local residents and the elderly. Both parties understood the uniqueness of tribal culture and learned to respect the differences between cultures through the process of learning and exchange. Additionally, the joint learning activity was fortunate to invite Zhang Ruohan, a teacher from Taipei University of Technology with a rich history in woodworking education. She proposed the three main axes of "One Year of Grain Growth," "Ten Years of Tree Growth," and "A Hundred Years of Human Growth," with wood education sustainability as the theme. It achieved a consensus on wood creativity culture, triggered identification and cultural awareness, and implemented aesthetics and wood environmental science education in life.
"Wood education" is not only interdisciplinary innovation but also drives the industrial economy and balances deforestation for environmental sustainability. As a co-promoter of "Bamboo and Wood Creativity," we look forward to leading all generations and fields of society to join through the joint learning model. We aim to transform the impression of being old, outdated, and impoverished in rural areas with design actions. With the belief in inclusiveness and shared prosperity, we can let culture take root.
